Music
Music is included in the regular curriculum in grades K-6. St. Joseph’s School students present two annual concerts: a Christmas concert in St. John’s Cathedral (held just before Christmas break) and a spring concert (usually held in April) that has been presented in various venues.
St. Joseph’s School is also proud to offer the following extracurricular music programs, and encourages all students to participate them:
Beginning Band is offered to all students 5th through 8th grades. Band rehearsal is held twice per week during lunch recess. It is never too late to start! Beginning band students in 6th through 8th grades may challenge into the Intermediate Band by passing a proficiency test.
Intermediate Band is offered to students in grades 6-8 with experience playing an instrument. They rehearse twice weekly before school and perform at the annual school music concerts and events.
All band students receive a letter grade in band.
Honor Choir: all students in grades 3-8 are invited to audition for the St. Joseph’s School Honor Choir. Rehearsals are held twice weekly before school, and members must adhere to a conduct code to remain in the group. The choir uniforms include a special red sweater vest, and members are charged a small cleaning/rental fee. The choir sings at weekly school Masses (usually on Tuesdays). They have performed for many groups and functions throughout the city, such as Boise City Hall, the Idaho Statehouse, Wishing Star fundraisers, hospitals, nursing homes, and at special parish events and Masses.
Intermediate Honor Choir is open to selected choir members in grades 5-8 only. They meet twice weekly before school and perform more difficult pieces to help them prepare for high school singing. They also perform throughout the community as a small group, as well as with the entire choir.
Bell Choir: All students in grades 5-8 are invited to audition for the Bell Choir each fall. No previous experience is required. These students meet twice weekly during lunch recess to rehearse. Bells are provided and there are several practice sessions prior to the audition. There is no fee for this activity. The Bell Choir also performs at venues throughout the city, and at special cathedral events.
Drama
Drama is included in the regular curriculum for grades 7 and 8. Instruction includes set design, costuming, improvisation, storytelling and drama skills. Both grades produce plays during the school year, as well as short skits for younger students. |
